How to Manually Upload Bank Statements for Reconciliation

Prepare and upload statements for automatic categorization.

This guide is designed for users with non-US bank accounts, or those who cannot use the automated bank sync feature. It explains how to manually upload your bank statements in PDF or CSV format, and how Adam processes these uploads to keep your financial data accurate and organized.

This guide covers Import with AI. If the manual Excel import method is preferred instead, see the article on how to upload bank statements for bulk rule processing.

With Import with AI, transactions are extracted and categorized automatically. To prevent automatic categorization, bank rules allow a rule to be created with the status set to Uncategorized. Visit Prevent Automatic Categorization with a Bank Rule

Step 1: Go to the upload page

Log in to Tyms and get to the upload screen using either of these routes:

  1. Option A: Via Dashboard
On the Dashboard, click Upload now under "Upload bank statements." If you've already added your bank accounts, you'll instead see them listed under Bank Accounts, click Upload statement on the relevant bank.

  2. Option B: Via Banking
Click Banking in the top navigation, then select Bank Accounts. You'll see a list of your bank accounts, click Upload statement on the relevant bank. Alternatively, click on the bank name itself (it's clickable) to open its Bank Transactions page, then click Add transaction and select Ask Adam.

(On the Bank Transactions page, before you've uploaded anything, the table will be empty since there are no transactions yet.)

Step 2: Upload Your Bank Statement from the Bank Accounts.

If this is your first time using AI Import, you'll be prompted to complete a short form with information about your business to Train Adam. This helps the AI better understand your business, categorize your bank transactions more accurately, and reduce the chances of misclassification during processing.

After completing and submitting the form, you'll land on the Bank statements tab (inside the selected bank account's page).

  1. Select the year the statement belongs to (e.g., 2026).

  2. In the upload box, either drag and drop your file(s), or click Select up to 10 files and choose the document(s) you want to upload.

    • Accepted formats: PDF, CSV, TXT, XLSX, XLS, PNG, JPEG, GIF, WEBP (up to 10 files, 10MB each).

After the upload completes, you'll remain on the Bank statements page. Under Recent uploads, you'll see a table listing every file you've uploaded, along with its status (e.g., Pending, Processing, Processed), so you can track progress. Adam will extract, categorize, and display all transactions in the Bank Transactions table for review or export.

Note: Categorized transactions can only be edited or deleted from the Bank Transactions table.

Important upload tips

  • For large files, break them into smaller chunks: a maximum of 15,000 characters (~100 transactions) or 10 pages per upload.

  • Avoid closing or refreshing the page while Adam is processing the file. Processing may take up to 5 minutes, depending on file size.

How Adam handles unidentified bank accounts

If you upload a bank statement but:

  1. You do not select a bank account, or

  2. The bank account does not yet exist in your Tyms setup,

Tyms will not let you complete the upload. You will need to create the bank account first, then select it in the Bank account field before you can proceed.

Note: AI Credit Usage and Charge Alerts

Uploading and processing bank statements consume AI credits based on:

  • The length of the uploaded document (number of pages or characters).

  • The number of transactions extracted and processed.

Be aware:

  • Large uploads or many transactions will use more credits.

  • If your upload exceeds the credit limit or file size, Adam will notify you with an alert.

  • Monitor your credit balance regularly to avoid interruptions or failed uploads.
