How to Manually Categorize Your Bank Statements

Learn how to manually adjust entries even after transaction have be auto-categorized

Step 1: Navigate to Bank Transactions

  1. Click Banking on the top navigation menu.

  2. Select Bank Accounts from the dropdown.

  3. You'll see a list of your connected banks. Click on the specific bank you want to manage (bank names are clickable).

  4. On the bank's page, click the Bank Transactions tab.

Step 2: Open the Transaction Reconciliation Panel

Even when Adam auto-categorizes your transactions, you can manually adjust any field to fit your needs. How you open the reconciliation panel depends on the transaction's current status:

  • Already categorized? Click the Category field to edit it.

  • Still marked Uncategorized? Click the Uncategorized status tag instead.

Either action opens the same Transaction Reconciliation pop-up, where you can categorize, split, or match the transaction.

To recategorize an already-categorized transaction:

  • Click on the Category field for that transaction.

  • The Transaction Reconciliation pop-up will open.

To categorize a transaction still marked "Uncategorized":

  • Click on the Uncategorized status tag for that transaction.

  • The Transaction Reconciliation pop-up will open.

Either way, the same pop-up appears with three tabs: Categorize, Split, and Match.

Step 3: Choose the Right Option

To Categorize:

  • Select the Categorize tab.

  • Click the dropdown under Category and pick the account that best matches the transaction (e.g., Advertising, Salaries, Audit Expenses), based on your Chart of Accounts (COA).

  • Your changes save instantly, no extra steps needed.

To Split a Transaction:

  • Select the Split tab if the transaction needs to be divided across multiple categories.

To Match a Transaction:

  • Select the Match tab if the transaction should be matched to an existing payable/receivable.

  • Click Select payable, enter the amount, and click Add Match if matching multiple entries.

  • The Match Total at the bottom shows your progress against the transaction amount (e.g., $0.00 / $150,000.00).

  • Click Save once complete.

Choosing the Right Category (Based on Your Chart of Accounts)

The Category field determines which account in your Chart of Accounts this transaction belongs to.

  1. Click on the Category cell (or Uncategorized tag) for any row.

  2. A dropdown will appear listing your COA accounts.

  3. Pick the account that best describes the transaction (e.g., Advertising, Audit Expenses, Salaries).

  4. Save: changes apply instantly.
